GENERAL Sir John Monash achieved many things in his life though never, it could be argued, by circumstance and opportunity alone.
He was also many things, Australian born, Prussian Jew by heritage but above all a polymath.
Even if his parents had remained in Prussia’s Posen province, his natural intelligence, with the right sponsor might have led him through German universities and into the Prussian army where he could have fought as an adversary.
