WHEN Vlad Putin made his decision to commit Russian forces to “reoccupy” the independent Ukrainian republic, he envisaged the campaign would be short, sharp and decisive. It has proved anything but with Russian casualties, depending whose figures one accepts, in astronomical figures.
By every assessment, it has proved a monumental blow to Russian superiority and prestige, though gallant Ukraine through its inspirational president has also paid a heavy price in infrastructure and particularly civilian lives.
