Major General Stuart Lyle Smith, AO, DSC

Allow me to tell you about a soldier whom I admire… Major General Stuart Lyle Smith, AO, DSC (Rtd). When he was CO of 1RAR I rang and asked him if he would fly from Townsville to Brisbane to be a guest speaker at a dinner I had organised at Victoria Barracks in Brisbane for former members of the 1RAR Group Vietnam 65-66 and members of the 173d Airborne Brigade (Sep), I advised him that I had no money budgeted to cover the costs, without hesitation he said he’d most definitely be there.

During his speech, we learnt that his father was killed in Vietnam while serving with 5 RAR. Today I found this video on the ANZAC Portal and I share it with you. I have maintained contact with Stu over the years and followed his career and thinking how proud his father would have been of his achievements.
