HOME OF THE HERO

Townsville is no stranger to military heroes, some from unlikely places.

TOWNSVILLE is a city with a lengthy roll of real military heroes.

As a historic garrison city, it played a pivotal role in defending Australia during the Battle of the Coral Sea, and thousands of Townsville troops have deployed to overseas wars.

There are many who have distinguished themselves who have at some stage called Townsville home.

The three Lavarack Barracks-based, original Royal Australian Regiment battalions record many such names, along with the symbolic battle honours and NRL heraldry in they 4K hold in trust for past, present and future members.

Brisbane-born General Sir John Lavarack, KCMG KCVO KBE CB DSO served with distinction in both world wars, then later as Queensland governor, was no stranger to Townsville where the main military barracks are named in his honour.
