On this day: 65 years ago, Bell Chief Pilot Floyd Carlson and Chief Experimental Test Pilot Elton Smith made the maiden flight of the prototype UH-1 “Huey” at Hurst, Texas (October 20, 1956). Huey became a symbol of American involvement in Vietnam, and as a result, become one of the most recognized helicopters in the world.
