IT’S a little-known statistic that one-quarter of all US navy World War II Pacific Ocean submarine patrols emanated from Western Australia’s Fremantle Harbour.

When US submarines were redeployed from Manilla after Pearl Harbor, Fremantle and Brisbane were chosen as bases considered remote enough from Japanese air attack, but close enough to mount Pacific patrols.

The US boats would later be joined by British and Dutch submarines as their former south-east Asian bases were captured.
