AGE HAS CERTAINLY DULLED SOME OF THEM

While the others struggle to inspire

EIGHTY years ago this Tuesday, Dec 7, 1941, US President Franklin D Roosevelt declared war on Japan in response an unprovoked though not totally unexpected attack on Pearl Harbor.

Roosevelt was just 59 and suffering the effects of polio, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, angina pectoris and congestive heart failure.

Apart from those minor inconveniences, his personal aspirations were to be President for life of the American plutocracy.

Imperial Japan was motivated in part by its treatment post World War I when its former allies excluded it from sharing the spoils of the distribution of former Imperial German Pacific possessions.
