A TALE OF TWO GAMBLERS
By Ross Eastgate
You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table, there’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealin’s done…
THE late Kerry Packer was a gambler who thought he knew when to hold them, fold them or walk away, although walking away was not in his DNA. Nor was uncalculated risk, Mr Packer preferring to bluff his opponents to the point where they folded under his relentless, inscrutable pressure.
Once asked his worth by a high roller US punter in Las Vegas, Packer simply turned the question.
When he was told how much Packer was alleged to have responded, “I’ll toss you for it, double or nothing!”
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin plays a similar game, betting the West doesn’t have the will, nor importantly the resources, to counter his Ukraine gambit.
