AUSTRALIAN General John Monash was that rare combination of entrepreneur, polymath and military strategist who was arguably Australia’s outstanding military leader.
Professional engineer, lawyer and part-time soldier, he rose to senior command through service at Gallipoli and on the Western Front.
He was a product of his intellect, ingenuity and opportunity, eschewing politics when he returned to Australia post-war.
Nonetheless, his initiatives to ensure the men he had commanded were better suited to return to their former lives proved a model for other countries suddenly dealing with thousands of veterans affected by their service.
Between the two world wars, a class of leader emerged more intent on personal advantage than seriously studying the art of war.
